Psychedelic-assisted care & Ukraine

Ukrainian soldiers and civilians exposed to war deserve access to excellent trauma care. That includes established treatments now, and well-designed research into promising new approaches, including psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

Why access matters

Some people with post-traumatic stress disorder or depression do not improve enough with their first treatments. They deserve options, not stigma. Research into MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD and other psychedelic-assisted interventions offers promising questions, but significant uncertainties remain about effectiveness, safety, training and long-term outcomes.

I support responsible, equitable access where treatments are legal and clinically appropriate: careful screening, informed consent, qualified supervision, psychological support, follow-up and honest communication about risks. I do not support unregulated self-treatment or presenting experimental options as proven cures.

What the evidence can and cannot tell us

The US National Center for PTSD reports promising results from MDMA-assisted therapy trials, while highlighting difficulties keeping participants unaware of their treatment and the limited representation of veterans. Results from selected trial participants cannot automatically be assumed to apply to Ukrainian soldiers living with ongoing war, complex injuries or other health conditions. Different substances and diagnoses need separate evidence.

Responsible access in Ukraine

In its May 2026 statement linked below, Ukraine’s State Expert Center emphasized regulated clinical trials, ethical oversight, trained specialists and risk monitoring. That statement is not confirmation that a treatment is approved or routinely available. Improving access should include established trauma care now, and properly authorized research with voluntary consent, independent oversight, affordable follow-up and the right to decline without consequences for military service.

Research and context

Important: Legal status and medical availability vary by location and change over time. Psychedelic treatments can carry serious psychological and medical risks, especially for some psychiatric conditions or with interacting medications. Speak with an appropriately trained medical professional.
