Meditation centers & retreats
I have visited meditation centers across Asia and learned that different places offer very different atmospheres. These are starting points for your own research, not a guarantee of availability. Always check current visa rules, retreat requirements, safety conditions and prices before traveling.
Places and networks worth knowing
- Goenka Vipassana centers, worldwide: structured 10-day introductory courses, usually donation-funded. Find a center ↗
- Wat Pah Nanachat, Thailand: a monastery in the Ajahn Chah Forest tradition that has welcomed international visitors. Official website ↗
- Forest Sangha: international monasteries and practice communities in the Thai Forest tradition. Find a monastery ↗
- Wat Pa Tam Wua, Thailand: forest retreat experience in northern Thailand. Search official current visitor information before visiting.
- Suan Mokkh, Thailand: retreat tradition linked to Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. Confirm current schedules directly with the center.
I especially encourage trying more than one place and learning what each practice is actually teaching. No teacher has a monopoly on wisdom.
